Science

Science is mandatory for all students from Year 7 to Year 10.

Science 7-10 provides a way of inquiring about the world around us. It explores evidence and investigates ways to discover, develop and produce solutions to real-world problems. Science emphasises the skills for working scientifically, as well as critical and creative thinking to address scientific issues.

In Years 11 and 12, students can choose from different science disciplines, including:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Earth and Environmental Science
  • Investigating Science
  • Physics.

In Year 12, students who are studying at least one other science subject may also choose to study Science Extension.

The aim of Science is to provide learning experiences through which students will:
  • acquire scientific knowledge and skills and develop understanding about phenomena within and beyond their experiences
  • develop an appreciation of science as a human activity and apply their understanding to their everyday life
  • develop positive values about and attitudes towards themselves, others, lifelong learning, science and the environment.

Science is a compulsory subject for all students in Years 7 to 10. The topics covered in junior years include all the major strands, i.e. biology, chemistry, physics and geology.

In Senior Years, Science is an elective and students can either choose up to three sciences from Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Science or Physics or elect Senior Science which covers a variety of areas.
