Technology (Mandatory), Food Technology, Textiles and Design, and Hospitality VET are all subjects taught at Bega High School under the Technology and Applied Studies - Home Economics umbrella.
Technology (Mandatory) is delivered to all boys and girls in Years 7 and 8. Students tackle problems put to them through design briefs. Practical food preparation and sewing skills are developed and encouraged through activities ranging from tie dyeing, fabric painting and sewing to planning, preparing and presenting food. Students can study these areas further by electing Food Technology and Textiles and Design in Years 9 to 12.
Hospitality is a Vocational Education and Training course which may be elected in the senior years. Students have the choice of undertaking either a commercial cookery or food and beverage strand. In studying these courses, students demonstrate competencies which contribute to trade qualifications whilst still at school. Practical work is a large part of these courses which sees students participate in a wide variety of catering events using our state of the art commercial kitchen.
The Home Economics staff is continually upgrading their teaching and learning skills through professional development. This includes attendance at the biennial Home Economics National Conference in Darwin. Teachers have also been integrating visual learning tools and into their programs, and designing teaching programs to be supported by the new laptops which all Year 9 and 10 students have received. Our students have enjoyed excellent HSC results, gaining first place in the state in the HSC Hospitality exam and 6th place in the HSC Food Technology paper.
